Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary

Helped Approve a New National Marine Sanctuary South of DC on the Potomac River

The DC and Ocean City Chapters worked together to help approve the first National Marine Sanctuary, Mallows Bay-Potomac River, in almost 20 years! Both Chapters sent a letter to NOAA supporting the proposed sanctuary. The DC Chapter attended public meetings, promoted the sanctuary on social media, and organized a paddle event at the site to raise awareness. Surfrider Foundation thanks the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation for their help in this campaign.

Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C. was designated by NOAA in order to protect and conserve shipwrecks and cultural heritage resources located there, foster education and research partnerships, and increase opportunities for public access, tourism and economic development.
